Great Dog Training Advice
What Would Jeff Do? Dog Training Tip of the Day #120

I think my dog hates the walks.

Lets put things into scale a little, lets go back to when you where struggling with your dog. Your dog was pulling, lunging, barking, jumping and lots of nonsense. You hated the walks, did not look forward to them, you might have even cried a little before, during and after them. You struggled for weeks, months and sometimes years.

Then you busted your butt to get your dog into a great space with some great behavior. Your dog is making some great progress, the reactivity is under control or eliminated. Things are getting great with you and your dog, things are less stressful for you, walks are fun, you are enjoying the walks...BUT....you dog is just walking along with you and you think your dog is "sad" or "bored", your dog is actually just being calm, and the walk is work and your dog is concentrating on that work.

We don't train competition dogs, we don't do high drive obedience, we are family trainers, that does not mean we want dogs to be bored or unmotivated, but we teach calmness in dogs and the biggest thing we see with dogs is overarousal in dogs, and what you see is the side effects of that overarousal (go to the first paragraph).

So there is plenty of time for high drive activities which we encourage you to do with your dog, but not on the walk. So enjoy the walk, enjoy the calmness and the non-reactivity and your world can finally open up with your dog.
